About Lafayette Housing Authority

The Lafayette Housing Authority (LHA) administers the Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher program to over 1200 households in the cities of Lafayette, West Lafayette and the five mile radius surrounding the cities. The Section 8 program was created in 1974 under the Community Development Act. It is one of the federal government's largest programs for assisting low income families to secure housing at an affordable cost. Funding for the Section 8 program is provided from the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).

Participants on the program rent from private landlords and pay approximately 30% (not to exceed 40%) of their adjusted gross income toward rent, including an allowance for utilities paid by the participant. The Housing Authority pays assistance based on a payment standard set for the participant. The assistance is tied to the participant, not to the unit and thus provides flexibility to the participant in choosing where they want to live.

Mission Statement

* Provide affordable housing opportunities
* To stimulate the development of and increase the availability of affordable housing
* To ensure safe and decent housing for participants
* To promote self-sufficiency and independence
* To be fiscally responsible
* To perform these charges without discrimination and with respect for those we serve.
